How to Become a Nevada Supreme Court Justice
- 1). Open your computer's Internet browser and navigate to the Nevada Secretary of State website's Candidate Information page.
- 2). Click on the link "Important Candidate Dates" and print a copy. This document lists the forms and deadlines necessary for all candidates, including those running for Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court. The process begins in January of the election year, so obtain the forms early, some of which require detailed personal and financial information that takes time to gather.
- 3). Navigate to the "Procedures & Forms" page.
- 4). Click on "Campaign Guide" and print a copy. This guide will answer questions about how to fill in the forms, filing fees, code of conduct rules for running your campaign, financial practices and reporting procedures, as well as other frequently asked questions.
- 5). Mark deadlines on your calendar. Note that there are different deadlines for judicial and non-judicial candidates. Of particular importance is the section of the Campaign Guide specifically addressing the requirement that judicial candidates follow the Nevada Code of Judicial Conduct, a copy of which is available on the State of Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline website.
- 6). Fill in the forms and check them carefully for accuracy.
- 7). Make copies of the forms and attach copies of supporting documentation. Keep copies of everything you submit, with supporting documentation attached, in a safe place.
- 8). Take the forms to the office of the Nevada Secretary of State for filing. Candidates must file all forms regardless of whether they win or lose the election, withdraw from the election, receive any contributions or incur any expenses.
