How Does Additional RAM Speed Up a Dell Desktop PC?
- Random access memory, or RAM for short, is a type of memory used in computers. In addition to standard memory, such as what is stored on a hard drive, tape, or disc, RAM provides memory space which does not need to move physically to be read or written, and can be read in any order, making it useful as operating memory to store changing bits of information that go along with running computer programs and processes. In general, the more RAM a computer has installed, the more easily it will be able to handle multitasking, and the less likely it will slow down or experience lag.
- Like any PC, Dell PCs have RAM which enables them to carry out normal system processes. Sometimes the amount of RAM that comes with a system is inadequate. The reason Dells and other computer manufactures may experience excessive slowdowns is because they often come loaded with unnecessary programs, often called "bloatware," which uses up some of the RAM's power to run in the background. This bloatware combined with the increasing memory demands of new programs and games means older computers are likely to slow down, and even newer ones will lag if too many programs are run at once.
Adding more RAM to a computer system will enable it to multitask more easily without slowing down, since a greater amount of memory is available. - Inevitably, as computers get older, the march of technology makes brings them closer and closer to obsolescence. An older PC, whether a Dell or not is likely to need some hardware upgrades in order to make it work well with modern programs: upgrading RAM is one of the most common and easiest ways to speed up a computer's performance. In the case of Dells, it is best to refer to Dell's official website to find what type of RAM a specific Dell model should use. RAM can be somewhat finicky, and choosing the wrong type for a certain motherboard will result in a computer that doesn't start up or works improperly. Using the type of memory Dell recommends (most likely memory purchased directly from them) is a good idea, although it may be possible to upgrade with less expensive third-party RAM.
