Wilderness Camping Sites - Try One on Your Next Camping Holiday
If you love the outdoors like I do, I am sure you will love going camping at remote camp sites.
Be it a weekend getaway, with just you and your partner, or a whole family with kids and pets, the experience will last a life time.
Late spring to early fall would be the best time to take your camping holidays unless of course you are into winter camping.
I am not, something about sleeping in the snow just does not set well with me.
Now there are many ways to set up at the different camping sites.
If there are roads that come to the camp site, I have friends that bring their 5th wheel trailers and live like kings and queens.
They even have satellite receivers so they do not miss the ball or hockey game.
Some like me, go a bit more primitive, I use a 16 ft.
cargo trailer.
I load my ATV's in the trailer, then when I get to the site I unload the ATV's and set the trailer up for me and my guess to sleep in.
I feel safer this way in bear country.
Also when I was younger I have slept in the back of my pick-up that has a cap on the truck.
For the brave at heart there's always tent sites or even just a canvas that can be stretch over top you, and sleep in your sleeping bag underneath.
What Is Needed At A Remote Camping Site? Some of the things you will definitely not find at a wilderness site is running water, restrooms or showers.
But that's OK because where I usually camp in Northern Ontario it is usually in one of many lake camp sites.
Which will give you all the water you need to shower in.
Just jump in.
As far as a toilet goes there is a big woods around you.
Although some people that use these sites every year have erected out houses and leave them there for the next years use.
In days gone by we would just drink out of the lake, they where crystal clean.
But now most campers bring water with them to drink.
Well not just water, they will bring along some other beverages for their trip north.
But for all your other needs of water, the lake water is just find.
And if you forget the drinking water just boil the water for awhile ahead of time before you need it.
The great thing of using a cargo trailer for camping, is you can load all your supplies inside it until you get to camp.
Then just unload and set up in your camp site.
You will have to make sure you have pots and pans with you.
Both for cooking and cleaning up after the meal.
A rope that can be used for a clothes line is also very handy.
One should always have a good supply of toilet paper on hand, although in a pinch I have used leaves.
Toilet paper is a lot nicer though.
For food i bring a lot of canned supplies.
The only thing is do not forget the can opener.
Using an axe to open cans leaves a few metal burrs that can bite you.
Also bring lots of clothing.
Be sure you have clothing for all seasons with you.
I have been camping in May and it has been snowing, and the exact same time the next year it could be in the 90's.
So be prepared.
In the evening its always nice to have a campfire.
So you will need an axe or chainsaw.
Usually you do not need to worry about firewood because the woods are full of dead trees.
Also its nice if you bring matches so you do not have to rub two sticks together.
It has never worked for me yet.
At the campfire it is pleasant to roast some hotdogs or marshmallows over the campfire so bring lots of supplies for that.
The other things you may want to consider bring would be a battery operated radio, cards, flashlight, a few cold pops for the card game.
However once you go for a few times you will know what you need to bring with you for your next wilderness camping trip.
