Speeding Up Your Metabolism
What is metabolism? It's the rate at which your body's engine is running.
This is known as your metabolic rate.
That means, your "engine" is running at a particular speed, particularly when you are relaxed or sleeping.
If you can learn how to speed up your metabolism, your body's engine will run faster and you can burn more calories.
Your body usually uses 60 to 75% of your energy when it's resting, not active.
Your metabolic rate basically means the number of calories you use up during the day for whatever reason.
You don't just burn calories when you exercise, but you also use them at all times of the day and night.
You need calories to function regardless of whether you're sleeping, active, exercising, cleaning, eating, and so on.
If your body fat percentage is low and you are muscular rather than fat, this may mean that you have a significantly higher metabolism than people who have less muscle.
Muscle burns fat, which means that you burn more calories when you have more muscle versus fat.
If you have a slow metabolism, you may have a difficult time staying thin.
And if you're younger, you'll generally have a higher metabolic rate than someone who's older; similarly, when you're younger you have more muscle mass and your metabolic processes are somewhat faster simply because your cells themselves are younger.
If your metabolism is lower, you'll generally tend to be heavier than someone with a high metabolism.
Fortunately, you can speed up your metabolism and therefore help burn fat.
There are some things you can do (or avoid) to do just that.
What causes a slow metabolism? Causes for slow metabolism (what you must avoid doing if possible) include the following: -Not exercising or being active enough -Eating or drinking junk foods that are high in sugar and salt -Following a very low calorie diet -Having an underactive thyroid -Eating junk food to the exclusion of healthy foods, and/or eating too much junk food -Fasting What can boost your metabolism? There are some actual things you can do that will help boost your metabolism, too.
These include: -Exercising, including anaerobic exercise like weightlifting that will build your muscles -Eating regularly and sensibly (don't skip meals, and try for five or six small meals a day) -Eat healthfully and avoid junk food -Avoid alcohol as much as possible, and limit or at least minimize sugar intake greatly -Drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day Remember that a healthy diet and correct exercise are the proper and permanent keys to weight loss.
