The very words "nursing" and "nurse" instantly bring to us the thought about the Lady with the Lamp or Florence Nightingale of the UK, who, driven by motivation and dedication, spent time nursing the wounds of the soldiers during the Crimean War. It is only the sheer work and efforts put in by that Lady with the Lamp that brought recognition to this nursing profession and the importance of nurses in health care industry.

In simple layman terms, nursing refers to the extension of personal and professional healthcare assistance to people, irrespective of whether they are sick or well, and also irrespective of any differentiation between the communities, groups, families, gender or even age.

The profession of nursing advocates prevention of any illness to the persons, providing adequate care and assistance to the persons who are either disabled or challenged physically and also who are suffering from some sort of health related problems.

The primary role of nursing profession is none other than promoting a safe and healthy environment, assistance in the development of systems for health management and above all, educating the people about the importance of health.

Who is a nurse? Any person who pursues the profession of nursing and takes responsibility for providing compassionate health care assistance to the patients in a healthcare environment is called a nurse.

Any person, who has the basic schooling qualification with relative better proficiency in subjects such as Mathematics, science, physics, English, anatomy and biology can take up a nursing course by enrolling into a nursing school. A typical nurse, in addition to basic educational qualification should have compassion, the urge or motivation to help people at large and patients in particular. He or she should be mentally prepared to take up the challenging profession.

What does a nurse do in a hospital after crossing the first hurdle of educational qualification that includes theoretical knowledge and practical application.

The normal duties of a nurse can be broadly categorized in the following five categories:

1.Gathering necessary information about the patient and his or her health problem, broadly referred to as assessment.

2.Identifying the health-related problems of the patient and diagnosing the same; the role includes creation and maintenance of health related records sequentially.

3.Formulating the appropriate treatment plan for the patient in consultation with the patient, his or her relatives and the doctor who will diagnose the health condition.

4.Implementation of the suitable plan of action that is required for the treatment of the patient as suggested by the doctor or the specialist in the field of expertise.

5.Evaluation of the plan of action and the response from the patient for the treatment, that includes observing the developments in the patient's health, maintaining appropriate records and do all such things that will have a positive impact in patient and aid in transforming that patient to a normal person.
