How to Bind Books

    • 1). Begin by choosing the size and type of paper that you would like to use for your book. You can use plain, ruled or decorative. It is your choice.

    • 2). In stacks of seven to eight sheets, fold each stack in half. You will be working with each stack individually in the beginning part of the process. The amount of stacks that you have will ultimately determine the thickness of your book.

    • 3). Unfold each stack, and staple horizontally along the folded line. Each stack will require three staples. One in the exact middle, and one at each end. The end staples should be about one half inch from the end of the paper.

    • 4). Take each stapled stack, and put them together, one on top of the other.

    • 5). Cut a thin piece of fabric the same length as your pages. The piece of fabric should also be twice the width of the spine that is formed when the pieces of paper or stacked and pressed closely together. This piece of fabric will be used to secure the pages on the side, just like a book binding.

    • 6). Grasp the sheets in the folded position, and hold them firmly in one hand. With your other hand, apply some hot glue liberally along the side that will form the spine.

    • 7). Attach the piece of fabric along the glued spine. This will secure the edge and form the book.

    • 8). Apply the hot glue to one side of the book, along the edge and press the remaining fabric over. Do the same on the other side. You should now have a book with a fabric binding the runs vertically along the spine, and slightly extends over the sides for security.

    • 9). Next, measure the cardboard pieces. They should be slightly larger than the book in length and width. The pieces of cardboard cut to create the front and the back of the book, should be exactly the same size as each other. The piece cut for the binding should be the exact length of the covers and the exact width of the original spine.

Lay the cut pieces of cardboard out on a piece of fabric. This fabric will be the final wrapping of your book. Choose a color that compliments your personality, or you can even choose a decorative fabric.

    • 11

Arrange the cardboard pieces just like an open book on the fabric. The pieces should be arranged about 1/8 inch apart from each other. One large piece on the left, one on the right, and the spine in the middle.

    • 12

Glue the cardboard in place with a glue gun by covering the backs of the pieces with glue and pressing them onto the fabric.

    • 13

Cut the fabric around the glued pieces, leaving about 1/4 inch all the way around.

    • 14

Fold the fabric border over the edges of the cardboard, as neatly as possible. Carefully fold the corners, this should be done tightly.

    • 15

Place the bound pages directly in the center of the cardboard hardcover. They should be spine to spine, just as a regular book.

    • 16

Attach the bound pages to the cardboard hardcover with the hot glue and close the fabric cover over your pages, just as you would close a book.

    • 17

Attach the fabric cover to the first page, front and back. Once dry your book is finished.
