- Do not use vague wording to describe what you want. Identify exactly what it is you want. If you want a new baby crib, for example, note the brand, make and model. Simply saying "things for the baby" weakens your wish list. Be as specific as possible when creating your wish list to assist those who are shopping for your gifts so they can determine exactly what you need.
- A wish list should include alternatives in addition to your ideal item since some items may be out of stock or even outside of some people's budgets. Create two columns on your list labeled "Splurge" and "Save." If you want a watch, for example, you may place a black Timex watch in the "Save" column and a black Rolex in the "Splurge." This gives you or the gift givers options when purchasing items on your wish list and helps ensure that you receive items you want. Likewise, if the wish list is for things you want to enhance your personal life, creating a list of alternatives provides other options in case the items are not available.
- Make choosing items on your wish list easier for others by noting where they can buy the items. Research what stores carry the items you want for the cheapest price and recommend that the gift is purchased there. You also may include a link to the item online for easier shopping. Do not assume that others will know where to purchase these items, and include at least two locations from which they can choose.
- Divide your list into categories. College students may create a wish list that has categories such as books, supplies, dorm items and electronics. On the other hand, a wish list for guiding your academic life may list courses you want to take the most the following semester. As such, you may want to list needed classes, such as GPA boosters or electives. Categorizing a wish list not only helps you to keep track of what you need, but also helps others to assess your needs better.
