How to Adjust a Violin Sound Post
- 1). Place your violin on a flat surface and tighten the strings.
- 2). Insert the notched end of the sound post setter into the violin's F-hole and grab the sound post with the sound post setter's notches.
- 3). Turn the sound post setter's handle to dislodge the sound post, and maneuver it toward the middle of the violin's sound box, the highest part inside. Keep the sound post setter's handle perpendicular to the violin so the sound post will stay perpendicular.
- 4). Apply gentle up and down movements to the sound post setter to move the sound post toward its desired position. A position closer to the fingerboard will produce a more direct brilliant sound, while moving it away from the fingerboard will produce a richer sound. Moving the sound post toward the middle of the violin will increase the lower frequencies, while moving it outward will produce a brighter tone for higher strings.
- 5). Twist the sound post setter until both ends of the sound post form perfect wood-to-wood connections.
- 6). Tighten the E string of your violin to hold the sound post tight.
- 7). Turn the sound post setter to release the sound post and then pull the sound post setter out of the violin.
