How to Make My Laptop Wireless With Roadrunner

Identify the cable modem. This is the box that the Roadrunner technician installed in your home. On the back of the modem, you will see a thick cable line running into the modem as well as a network cable that currently connects to a wired computer or laptop. - 2). Unplug the power to the cable modem from the wall socket.

Unplug the network cable that connects the cable modem to the computer from the back of the computer. - 4). Identify the wireless router. You will have to purchase a wireless router separately.

Review the back of the wireless router. A number of ports line the back of the router, some used for connecting out to a computer. One port will be marked as the Internet port. - 6). Plug the network cable that you previous removed from the back of the computer into the Internet port on the router. This will connect the modem and the router.
- 7). Reconnect the power to the cable modem and plug in the power to the wireless router.

Plug a second network cable into one of the out-going ports on the back of the router. Then connect this cable to the network port on the back of the computer or laptop. - 9). Check the lights on the front of the wireless router. You should see a power light, an Internet light and one of the computer port lights (these will usually be numbered) illuminated.

Insert the router software CD into the computer or laptop that is connected to the router. Usually, the software will run a configuration wizard to assist in setting up the router's configuration. This is a good time to consider setting up a security password on the router so that people can't connect to the router without your permission. - 11
Complete the router setup. The computer that is wired to the router should have an Internet connection. Any machine that has a wireless card should pick up the router's signal and notify you that a wireless network is within range. If you are using the laptop as the wired computer for the initial router setup, you can disconnect the network cable from the laptop now. - 12

Use the wireless connection agent on the laptop to connect to the new wireless network. If you set up a security password for the router, you will be prompted for this password during the connection process. Allow the laptop to make the connection to the network automatically whenever it is in range and enjoy connecting to the Internet anywhere in your home.
