How to Set Metal Fence Posts

    • 1). Choose one end of the fence line and attach one end of the construction string to the side of the corner post frame on what is to be the outside of the fence.

    • 2). Run the string along the proposed fence line to the opposite end of the fence line and attach the string to the outside side of this end's corner wooden frame. Pull it tight and tie it off on the post.

    • 3). Measure along the string and mark off 10 foot increments to mark placement of a post every 10 feet.

    • 4). Position a T post on the first 10 foot mark, spade end down, so the knobby side of the post is just touching the string without pushing the string out.

    • 5). Hold the post upright in place, push the string away from the post with your leg, and slide the driver down over the top of the post.

    • 6). Lift the driver up and tap it down on the post two times to set the end of the post into the ground. Using the driver to keep the post straight up, lift it and slam it down hard on the post.

    • 7). Continue driving down on the post with the driver until the top of the attached spade is just under the surface of the ground.

    • 8). Pull the driver off the post and check to see if the post is leaning and not straight up and down; it can be pushed and pulled by hand until it is straight up.
