- 1). Search for a brand that offers an attachable exercise wheel that can be attached with wires. These wires will be needed to securely fasten the wheel to the cage so that your small pet can use it freely. Many pet stores, such as Petco and Pet Supplies Plus, offer these hook-on rodent wheels. You can also find them online at eBay or Amazon.
- 2). Consider a brand of exercise wheel that comes with attachable tubes. These types of exercise wheels are easy to hook to the cage by using the tubes. The hamster will crawl through the tubes from the main area in his cage to the hamster wheel. This type of addition to a hamster cage is often easier than hooking the exercise wheel to the cage with wires.
- 3). Securely fasten any wires that the exercise wheel comes with so that your rodent cannot escape through the wheel. You should also make sure that the wheel does not wobble after being attached, as this can be noisy and possibly injure your pet.
- 4). Observe your pet in the wheel after it has been hooked to the cage to ensure that it is functioning properly and securely fastened. Make adjustments as necessary.
