Type 2 Diabetes - It Is Never Too Late to Start Exercising!

If exercise were a drug, every doctor would prescribe it to people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes due to its miraculous effects.
When you become physically active, you burn more calories and use insulin more efficiently.
Exercise is known as the "other insulin" as it has a direct beneficial impact on lowering blood sugar.
Let us break down some misconceptions about exercise...
Exercise is and can be a way of life.
It can be an integral part of your lifestyle and your being.
Perhaps you are familiar with the concept regarding the mind to body connection.
Your physical body runs in sync with the mental aspect of your body.
Physical activity is so beneficial to health because it exercises both of these systems.
Most people believe exercise only helps you lose weight and get in better physical shape.
Although this is true, and certainly great news to diabetics, the benefits of exercise are often underestimated and shortsighted.
The benefits of physical activity to mental health are also truly profound.
You can certainly measure and study how exercise decreases both incidence and prevalence rates of depression and anxiety.
Additionally, exercise increases your sense of satisfaction with yourself.
It increases your self-esteem and, most importantly, your self-image.
In short, exercise makes you feel great.
Now, many Type 2 diabetics being introduced to the necessity of exercise in order to treat their condition may find themselves discouraged and lacking motivation.
After all, an exercise habit is not so easy to develop, especially since days as an active young adult have passed.
There is a common misconception regarding the timing of starting an exercise plan as a middle-aged adult.
Trust it is never too late to start exercising.
No matter how old you are, no matter how unfit or overweight you may be! If your diabetes condition has worsened overtime, if your blood pressure status requires medication, if your cholesterol levels are high: exercise is the right treatment.
It is the natural medication for your health problems.
And you can start today.
It's commonly said the best time to start was yesterday.
The second best time is today.
Tomorrow is not a gamble worth taking, for who knows what lies in store for you in the future? As a diabetic it is not wise to disregard your increased risk for potential complications.
When it comes down to it, think of it this way...
A year or two from now, or whatever age reference point awaits you, the decisions of today will affect the quality of your life at that point in time.
Let us suppose you will be 45 in a couple of years.
You can be 45, in shape with your Type 2 diabetes under control, with a healthy mind and body and an improved quality of life.
Or you can be the same as you are today, with potentially worse health.
It is quite clear which path is the one worth taking.
