    Caloric Reduction

    • Calories are needed by the body to function appropriately and to carry on every day tasks efficiently. When calories are consumed, the body uses some of them for energy and the rest are stored as fat. This can increase your weight and triglyceride levels. Being overweight is a risk factor for high triglycerides. To lower your levels and promote weight loss, cut back on your total calories. To lose a pound a week, reduce your daily total by 500 calories.

    Fats

    • Fats come in good forms and bad forms. The bad forms should be eliminated and the good ones should be used in place of them. Bad fats are saturated and they can be found in red meat, whole fat dairy products and deep fried foods. Trans fats are also a bad type of fat that can be found in fried foods and commercial baked goods like cookies, crackers and pastries. Read labels and make sure products say "trans fat free" on them. You can tell if a product is free of trans fats if it does not contain hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Instead of eating meats that are high in fat, choose cold water fish that have omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel and herring. Use olive oil and canola oil to cook with.

    Alcohol

    • Under normal circumstances, one to two alcoholic beverages a day can bring benefits to the body. But when you have elevated triglyceride levels, it can make them worse. Avoid alcohol altogether to help lower your levels.

    Cholesterol

    • Cholesterol can be found in various foods and it should be consumed in limited amounts. Processed meats and eggs are examples of high cholesterol foods. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should keep your daily cholesterol intake to 300 mg a day or 200 mg a day if you have heart disease.

    Sweets

    • Insulin is a fat storage hormone that gets released by the pancreas. When you eat high amounts of simple sugars and white flour products, your blood sugar levels will rise and insulin will be released to stabilize them. This in turn, can increase your triglyceride levels. Avoid eating these foods to lower your triglycerides.
