Angel Trees provide an opportunity for anonymous gift giving during the Christmas season. The Salvation Army has used the Angel Tree concept for more than 100 years to match givers with recipients who would not otherwise have gifts at holiday time. Churches, schools and retail stores put paper angels containing written wishes from hopeful recipients on standing trees for folks to claim. Instead of erecting an artificial tree to place the angels, consider creating a bulletin board Angel Tree.

    Painted Tree

    • Cover a bulletin board with light-brown paper. Draw a Christmas-tree shape in the center of the board. Draw the tree so that its branches reach the top, but stop 6 inches from the bottom so you can draw a trunk there. Fill in the tree drawing with green tempera paint, available at craft stores. Use brown tempera to paint the tree trunk. Use red or gold precut letters to spell the words, "Christmas Angel Tree," along the top of the board. Staple a zig-zagged strand of gold tinsel garland from the top to the bottom of the tree.

Staple white doilies to the tree to make angels. Cut 3-inch circles from tan construction paper to tape to the doilies as heads. Draw a face on each one. Staple yarn to the top of each angel-head.

Attach Angel Tree gift requests to each angel with push-pins. Post information about the way to use of your Angel Tree on the board.

    Crepe Paper Tree

    • Place a green paper tree that stretches from top to bottom in the center of a bright red background on your bulletin board. Tape letters to spell, "Angel Tree," on the wall above the board. Buy green crepe paper where party supplies are sold. Cut 12-inch lengths of the crepe paper to staple to the tree. Beginning at the treetop, staple the tops of two or three strips of crepe paper, letting the ends hang. Staple more strips, 6 inches underneath them, across the width of the tree. Fill in the rest of the tree with rows of crepe paper strips, stapled each time beneath the preceding row.

Tape your Angel Tree gift requests to the ends of the crepe paper strips. Post printed instructions on the board that detail how to tear a gift request from the tree, fill the request, then bring the gift to a designated area.

    Handprint Tree

    • Ask teachers or Sunday school leaders to trace children's handprints onto green construction paper so you can make a tree out of them on your bulletin board. Start the project one or two weeks before you will put up the Angel Tree, so you can accumulate 200 or more handprints. On a blue paper background, staple the first handprint, fingers pointed down, in the center of the top of the board. Staple two more beneath it, then three below them. Staple rows of handprints until you have created a triangle shaped tree.

Staple the words, "Lend A Hand" on the left side of the tree and the words, "Angel Tree" on the other side. Use angel-shaped paper to provide the information about gift requests. Pin the angel gift requests to the tree with push-pins. Post information about how to use your Angel Tree on the board.
