How to Shade a Pergola

    • 1). Research creeping plants native to the area where you plan to shade the pergola. Native plants require less maintenance and have a higher capability of thriving in their ideal environment.

    • 2). Plant creeping vines at the base of every pergola post. Prep the soil by removing weeds and raking over to create a smooth surface. Add a layer of compost to the planting site.

    • 3). Using a shovel, mix the compost with the existing soil. Dig a hole large enough for planting and for room on the all sides for adding soil and compost mixture.

    • 4). Place the creeping vine in the hole and fill up with the remaining dirt. Press firmly into the ground. Alternatively, you could plant the creeping vines into a container and place them at the base of the posts.

    • 5). Train the creeping vines to grow around the posts and over the pergola for a shady tunnel. For heavy vines like grapevines, adding supports on the post can help to prevent the vine from falling over. Add hooks every 2 to 4 inches around the post to loop the vine around and to help support the plant. Screw them in for a snug fit.

    • 6). Over time, the vines will grow up and over the pergola and create a lush and green pergola cover. They will also cool the area off, which is perfect for summer.
