Protecting a home or business is a top priority for most people. The reliability and performance of a security system depends on the choice of components. The elements found on the alarm system help to keep people safe from intruders. There are several common elements of intrusion-detection systems.

    Motion Detectors

    • Motion detectors monitor large areas inside of a home or building. When anything moves around within the detector's range, a siren is alerted and loud sounds can be heard. Sophisticated motion detectors can distinguish between a family pet walking around at night and an intruder. Some motion detectors are part of stand-alone system, others are monitored by a security company who will notify the police.

    Sirens

    • Sirens found on intrusion-detection systems alert the home or business owner of an incident. Most security companies can install 15, 20 or 30 watt sirens. The sirens can be heard from the exterior of the building. Not all intrusion-detection sirens sound the same. Devices that are set off by the motion sensors have a distinct sound. Intruders will usually leave once they hear the sirens since the proper authorities are usually being notified.

    Closed-Circuit Sensors

    • Unlike motion detectors, closed-circuit sensors are used on doors and windows. When a window is closed, an electrical current will flow between the two ends of the circuit. Anytime the window is opened, the electricity immediately stops flowing. As a result, the alarm is triggered. Intruders who attempt to cut the wires providing electricity also trigger the alarm system, notifying the security company and police.
