How to Calculate Acreage in Arcgis

    • 1). Open ArcMap 9.3 and start a new map.

    • 2). Click the "Add Data" button and navigate to the polygon shapefile or geodatabase feature class for which you want to calculate acreage. Click "OK."

    • 3). Click on the shapefile or feature class name to highlight it, then click the right mouse button and select "Open Attribute Table."

    • 4). Click "Options," then "Add Field." This opens the "Add Field" dialog box.

    • 5). Type a name for your new field (for example, "Acres"), and select "Double" from the "Type" drop-down box. Click "OK."

    • 6). Right-click on your new field header, and select "Calculate Geometry." Click "Yes" to continue. This opens the "Calculate Geometry" dialog box.

    • 7). Select "Area" for "Property" and "Acres US [ac]" for "Units." Click "OK."
