The long-term health benefits of bariatric surgery are just now beginning to come to light.
Doctors and surgeons already knew that weight loss surgery would improve and cure conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure.
The less obvious long-term health benefits are now surfacing as long term study results are being tallied.
Long term benefits of this surgery include: Lower risk of certain types of cancer - Studies show that weight loss decreases the risks of breast, colon, esophageal and kidney cancer.
Doctors do not fully understand why this is but studies have shown that people who have bariatric surgery are less likely to develop cancer than their obese counterparts.
Doctors are not sure if this lower risk is due to the healthier diet eaten by bariatric patients or some other mechanism.
Doctors also found that bariatric patients have a slight decrease in other types of cancer but not in significant numbers.
Elimination of drugs used to treat asthma, osteoarthritis and autoimmune diseases - Long-term use of drugs used to treat these diseases have harmful effects on the overall health of the patient.
It is not exactly known as to how bariatric surgery assists to resolve these conditions.
It appears that losing weight decreases certain inflammatory processes.
Controlling inflammation is the key to living with these diseases so anything that decreases or eliminates that inflammation is a good thing.
Bariatric surgery has been shown to allow patients to do away with all drugs used in the treatment of asthma, osteoarthritis and autoimmune diseases.
Breaks the cycle of generational obesity - Studies are showing that children born to mothers who have had bariatric surgery are three times less likely to develop obesity.
Doctors feel this is due to the fact that mothers who have had bariatric surgery are better educated in proper nutrition.
They are able to pass this knowledge on to their children.
The children grow up in an environment where smaller food portions and good food choices are keys to their mother's weight loss success.
These mothers also make better food choices about what to feed their children.
Healthy eating becomes a family affair.
Relieves low back pain - Recent studies have shown that patients who have lower back pain prior to surgery experience marked improvement as early as six weeks after surgery.
Decreases in pain allow for a better quality of life.
What the correlation is between back pain and obesity is still unknown.
Theories abound but no study is yet complete that specifically explains the connection.
If you are considering this type of surgery, be sure to discuss the benefits that you may receive from this procedure.
While there are always risks, there are also many benefits to bariatric surgery that may have a positive impact on your long term health.
