How to Grow Beans in a Styrofoam Cup
- 1). Fill a Styrofoam cup three-quarters of the way with soil.
- 2). Dip your finger into the soil. If the soil feels dusty, it is too dry and needs to be watered first. If the soil feels moist and some of the soil sticks to your finger, it is wet enough.
- 3). Make a hole 1/2 inch deep in the soil. Place two to three bean seeds into the hole and cover them up with dirt. Common choices are pinto, navy or lima beans.
- 4). Place the Styrofoam cup in a location where it will have sunlight during the daytime. A window sill would be a good location.
- 5). Check the soil in the cup daily. If it starts to feel too dry, pour a bit of water into the cup. Be careful not to add too much water; soil that is flooded will have a low oxygen content, and the roots of the plant will not be able to grow as well.
- 6). The plants should begin to grow about a week after being planted.
- 7). If desired, the bean plants can be repotted after the second pair of leaves has started growing.
