'Diabetes mellitus' is often simply referred to as diabetes.
It is a condition in which a person suffers from high blood sugar (glucose) level.
It occurs either due to decreased level of a hormone called 'insulin' or because the cells do not respond to insulin.
This hormone absorbs the glucose from the cells and utilizes it to convert it into energy.

There are also other two types of diabetes, they are; Diabetes insipidus, in which the cells fail to utilize insulin and Gestational diabetes which occurs in pregnant women.
Diabetic-management needs disciplined lifestyles which includes sensible weight control, a regular balanced diet and regular sensible exercises.
A diabetic patient should eat the same amount of food everyday, exercise at the same time everyday and must regularly take his or her medicines.
A careful selection from the food items should be made such as starches, vegetables, fruits meat and meat substitutes, milk and yoghurt.
And the most important thing that should be a definite no is fats, cholesterol and sweet.
In short the food should be light and easy to digest with lots of fiber content.
Some of the fruits have shown beneficial effects on the patients suffering from diabetes.
Fruits are generally low in fats and a list of them has shown positive effects on blood sugar (glucose) levels.
Off all of them grapefruit have some appetizing properties that are really effective and beneficial for the diabetic patients.

It is also rich in vitamin B1 that prevents damage of brain cells that occurs due to diabetic acidosis.

Another fruit that falls in the list is rose apple or commonly known in India as 'jamun'.
This fruit is a must in the condition of diabetes.
