How to Renew a Permanent Resident Card in Canada
- 1). Download and print the permanent resident card application (IMM 5445) from the website of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Complete it legibly.
- 2). Request a supplementary identification packet from either the CIC website or through phone order. You must order this form to be sent directly to your home address, it cannot be printed from the Internet. By ordering, you will receive an application kit in the mail that includes instructions, Supplementary Identification form IMM 5455 and the IMM 5410 original receipt of fee form (to be completed when you pay for the application at a bank or online). You can also request that form IMM 5445 be sent to you rather than downloading and printing it. Refer to the Resources section for a link to the order form, or request it through the call center at 888-242-2100.
- 3). Pay the $50 (Canadian) application fee. You can either pay the application fee online through the CIC website, choosing the "Sydney" filing center, or by taking the IMM 5410 form (ordered in Step 2 above) with you to a bank to pay the application fee. You must send IMM 5410 in with your application packet.
- 4). Gather the supporting documents. If you are applying for a new resident card after it expired, include it with your application. If your card is not yet expired, hold onto it until you retrieve your card. Additional documents include: a photocopy of your passport information pages, a copy of either your Record of Landing (IMM 1000), Confirmation of Permanent Residence, copy of Canadian driver's license, university ID card or a copy of your latest income tax assessment. You must also send two identical passport-size photos taken within the past 12 months. Place one of the photos on the provided sticker on IMM 5455 and the other in a small envelope.
- 5). Compile all forms and supporting documents and mail to the Sydney filing center. You must submit it to the Sydney filing center or else it will be returned to you.
