How to Write a Brief Statement for a Teaching Application

    • 1). Create a list of characteristics. Think of any awards and honors you received. Instead of merely listing the awards, think about what you did to earn them. Most improved? Greatest essay writer? Never missed a class? Finish the list by writing positive descriptive words from your friends and family or even words you would use to describe yourself.

    • 2). List your reasons for applying for this teaching job. Is it close to home? If so, this means you would be available to stay late and come in on short notice. If it offers a pay increase, you will be more likely to work hard in order to show that you are earning the pay raise. Consider the reasons to apply for the job from every angle, keeping in mind what the hiring committee desires and what will set your application apart from the rest.

    • 3). Using your list, begin writing a short statement within the application guidelines. At this point, you will likely have more good information than you can use. Choose a few words and phrases that stand out. The statement should form a conclusion about the value of your experiences including self-reflection, field work, future goals and career concerns.

    • 4). Review the statement to ensure it makes sense and uses action words. Avoid generic phrases like "I can contribute" or overused words like "important," "rewarding," "valuable," "fascinating," "gratifying," "helpful," "appreciate," "meaningful" or "useful." Use a thesaurus to find words that more closely express what you want to say. Then rewrite your statement at least twice. The final revision should take the best parts from the first drafts.

    • 5). If desired, type the finished statement on a word processor and print it for a professional look.
