    • 1). Earn TEFL certification. Although there is a high demand for English teachers in Austria, proper training and experience is what will make you enough money to live on. TEFL certification will help you increase your pay. It varies from employer to employer: Some places of employment don't need any certification course, just experience; others may require a particular certification course.

    • 2). Begin looking for a job. It is always better to start looking before you leave, so save yourself money and trouble and find work before the trip. The best options to start the job search are through the Fulbright Commission or through the British Council.

    • 3). Prepare for a job interview. If you are seeking work at a public or private school, often times the school will arrange a personal interview in the UK, the United States or a phone interview.

    • 4). Apply for a work visa. Work visas will require you to have a job offer and a valid passport and need to be filed with the Austrian embassy or consulate before you enter Austria.

    • 5). Prepare for your work stay in Austria. With most jobs, you will have to find your own housing and pay for your own airfare. Salaries will range between $20 to $40 an hour, as most English teachers work freelance. Pay is based on experience. If you happen to land a teaching assistant's job, they tend to make about $1,300 a month. Expect rent to cost around $550 a month in Vienna, but living outside the city can cut the cost significantly.
