Affordable Graduation Ideas
- Recent graduates may not always have the money for the things they want, so help them out by buying a membership for something they can use. A membership to a bulk store, for example, may help them save on groceries, while a membership to a movie rental service keeps them entertained in the dormitory. Try short-term, non-committal memberships for pricier things --- you may not be able to afford a full year's membership to a local gym, but a three-month pass gets their foot in the door.
- When you move out as a graduate, you don't always realize how much you need to take with you. Help recent grads prepare for the transition with themed survival baskets. For example, load up a laundry basket with detergent, dryer sheets and a roll of quarters. A first aid kit is equally helpful --- fill a plastic container with allergy medicine, bandages and disinfectant so that the graduate is never caught off guard.
- Help your graduate remember the good times he or she had in school by preparing a DIY memory gift. Put together a scrapbook chronicling your time together and include mementos like concert ticket stubs and notes you passed in class. For something your friend can look at every day, frame a photo of the two of you together and include a short letter with it that recalls your best memories together. Even when you go your separate ways, you will never be forgotten.
- Every graduate needs to save, save, save, and you can help. Give your friend a piggy bank so that she can save up spare coins for a rainy day. If you feel particularly sentimental, make some wishes on a handful of pennies and throw them in first. Include a letter for your friend explaining what you wish for her future, and encourage her to continue filling the piggy bank with wishes.
