How Found: As a child my parents would bring us up there every Memorial Weekend and we would stay for a week. We loved it! As we got older it seemed like more and more people found out about the campground. The rules got strict and the camping got lame!
So Mom and Dad started to find other places to take us.
Campground Review and Description
Description:
Now that I am a Mom myself and still LOVE to camp, I decided to take my family to Staircase for a camping trip. We only stayed 3 nights and got there early Thursday morning, which I thought would be plenty of time to get a "good spot" but I was wrong. There were only 3 spots left at the very end of the campground and we needed all 3 so we pitched tents in them.
Not even 30 minutes after arriving a Ranger came around and explained the rules and said that we looked like a roudy bunch and he didn't want any issues from us! Then he went on to explain that we couldn't save sites for people who have not arrived yet. So I may have fibbed and told him that we weren't. When you are not at your site or you are in your tent for the night you are supposed to put ALL of your food bins, coolers and drinks into your vehicles or bear lock boxes that are not even close to your site. We tried to put ours in the bed of our truck and got talked to and almost ticketed!
Needless to say, I totally see why my Mom and Dad no longer took us there. It was too much of a hassle camping there and not suitable for a group of campers that go to let loose and forget about real life for a few days!
Pros, Cons, Attractions and Additional Comments
Pros: The campground is BEAUTIFUL. Lots of hiking trails. Swimming hole.
Cons: To many enforced rules. Rangers are rude. expensive entrance fee of $15 per vehicle. Too many people camp there. Need to arrive on Tuesday to get a "good" site!
Attractions: Lake Cushman.
