Don"t Be a Resolutionary!

If you've been around the gym in January you may have heard a few terms.
Some call them "resolutionaries" others call them "Groundhogs.
" Who are "they"? They are the people who make New Years Resolutions on January 1 to get in shape, they descend on the local gym, they crowd the cardio machines and weight rooms, and then, like the Groundhog who sees his shadow, they scatter around the first week in February.
Does this sound familiar? We've all done it.
We've started the new year with every good intention to follow through and THIS YEAR make the changes we want to see in our lives.
But then the honeymoon fades, life gets in the way, motivation takes a powder and our resolutions are yesterday's news.
Don't let that happen this year! Take each new MONTH as an opportunity to revisit your resolutions and goals.
Ask yourself a few questions to determine if your goals are realistic, need a little tweaking, or are right on target.

  1. Is this truly something I want to do enough to work for it? Or is it something I think I should do? If every year you say you'll lose those last 5 pounds, but you never do...
perhaps it isn't something that is a priority right now.

  2. Is this goal realistic for my current lifestyle, or should I narrow my focus.
For example, if you're goal is to run a marathon but you're working full time and taking night classes, maybe right now you should focus on a half marathon or 5k.
Both would maintain your fitness, but would take less time.

  3. Is the goal taking you in the direction you really want to go, or would you rather head a little to the left or to the right? Don't be afraid to reframe the goal!
  4. Did you "miss" something that has surfaced over the last month? Well why wait until the new year to make another resolution? Why not make a "New Month's Resolution?" or even a "New Week" or if long term feels out of reach right now, why not a "New Day Resolution?"
I've heard so many people claim they don't make resolutions because they only feel bad when they fail at them.
The purpose of a resolution is not to point out all of our shortcomings, but to focus on making us into better versions of who we already are.
If your focus in starting to fade, now is the time to start anew! After all, there is no LAW that we can only change our lives once a year!
