How to Plant Verbena Seed

    • 1). Mix together equal parts of fine particle pine bark, peat moss and perlite. This is a soil mixture that stays loose when moist and drains well.

    • 2). Fill your seed tray halfway with your soil mixture. Do not start your seeds in a tray of garden soil. Soil straight out of the garden is not sterile. It can contain pests and plant disease. It is also too heavy and does not drain well.

    • 3). Spray the soil mixture with water until it is damp. This helps the seeds stay put once they are planted. Sprinkle the seeds across the soil in the seed tray.

    • 4). Cover the seeds with a thin layer of peat moss. Be sure that all the seeds are covered since verbena seeds need darkness in order to germinate. Place the seed tray in a warm, dark area. Keep the temperature around 65 degrees F for 15 to 20 days for seed germination. Mist the tray whenever it looks like it is drying out.

    • 5). Move the tray to a well-lighted area after most of the seeds have germinated and sprouted. Temperatures should be kept around 65 to 70 degrees F during the day and 55 to 60 degrees F during the night for good seedling growth.

    • 6). Transplant the seedlings into individual, small plant pots when the first true leaves appear on the seedlings. Once the last frost of the spring has occurred, plant the seedlings outside about 2 feet apart.
