How to Make Fairy Wings for Halloween
- 1). Gather your supplies. You will need galvanized steel wire. You can find this at most home improvement stores and some craft supply stores. A good thickness to use is 16 gauge. You will probably need between six and nine feet of wire. The length depends on how big the fairy is. A child's costume will require less wire.
- 2). Create two large circles with your length of wire by forming a figure eight. The ends of the wire should meet in the center of the eight. Trim the wire ends with the wire clippers and tightly wrap some duct tape around the joint to hold it in place and cover any sharp ends. The size of each loop on the figure eight is up to you, but this will determine the basic size of each wing.
- 3). Use the scissors to cut both legs off of the panty hose at the thigh. Stretch each leg over one of the wings. Pull it taut but be careful not to rip it. Pin the panty hose at the base of the wing to keep the hose taut. Then bend the wire to form the shape of a wing. If you're not sure how to shape it, look at a picture of a butterfly wing and try to mimic the shape. Once the shape is right, use the needle and thread to sew the panty hose to the base of the wings.
- 4). Repeat Step 3 for the other wing. Lay the set of wings out in front of you and make sure the shapes of the wings are mirror images.
- 5). Decorate your wings. Lay newspaper out on the ground or a large table and lay your wings flat on top. Use fabric paint, glitter and other decorations to embellish the wings. Prop the wings up to dry so that they don't stick to the newspaper.
- 6). Attach elastic loops to keep the wings in place after they have dried. Cut two lengths of elastic, about a foot long each, and tie them together at the end so that you have two loops. Then sew the loops onto the base of the butterfly wings, near the top. An arm will go through each loop.
