  Goths are people who use the medieval and Victorian eras for their inspiration in clothing, literature, home decoration, music, makeup and food.  This subculture uses black and other somber colors to convey a dark and mysterious appearance. You can create a Gothic atmosphere for your next birthday party with inexpensive materials. 
  
  

Birthday Invitations 

• You can send Gothic birthday invitations online. Use a handwriting font or ask someone skillful in calligraphy to write the invites. If you create them by hand, scan them onto your computer so you can e-mail them. Remember to include the place, time, and RSVP contact in the invitation.  
  
  

Cauldron Stew 

• A main entree for a Gothic meal can be an easily made stew. You can create a vegetarian version that involves using pumpkin as a base, or make a hearty beef stew with vegetables.  Serve the stew in a large soup pot or hollowed out pumpkin for a makeshift cauldron. French or other crusty bread completes the meal. 
  
  

Cotton Ball Spiderwebs 

• You will need pipe cleaners, cotton balls and thread. For each web, form five pipe cleaners into the shape of a star. Wind the thread around the star to secure the shape. Tug cotton balls over the star to create a web. Hang the spiderwebs around the room with dark thumbtacks.  
  
  

Decorations 

• Use scarlet red and purple colors for your streamers, tablecloth and napkins.  Black plates and cups make a good contrast to the decorations.  You can buy fancy-looking candlesticks at thrift stores and use them with black candles as a centerpiece. Dried red roses in a vase provides an additional Gothic touch to the table.  
  
  

Gift Bags

• Gift bags for a Gothic birthday party can include finger traps, plastic spider rings and fake ruby rings.  You can include makeup like black nail polish and dark lipstick for both female and male Goths. 
  
  

Skull Cake

• Death and skulls are important icons in Gothic culture. You can create a skull cake by using 18 ¼ ounces of cake mix in a 9x13 inch pan. When the cake is done and cooled, invert the cake on a platter and cut into a skull shape. Cover the skull with vanilla frosting and use chocolate frosting to make eyes and mouth.  Put gummy worms on the cake for an added spooky look. You can use candy corn for teeth. Serve with chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
