      Tropical plants are exotic plants that are found in the subtropical or tropical regions across the globe. Most tropical plants have large, showy flowers and prefer warm, humid climates and moist soils. They can survive well in poor quality soils and full shade. These plants can usually adapt well to their environments and are commonly used as house plants.

    Red Hibiscus

    • The red hibiscus (hibiscus clayi) is a large perennial that is native to tropical and subtropical regions all over the world. The flowers bloom from mid to late summer and grow up to 6 inches wide. The plant can reach heights up to 8 feet tall. It is tolerant of a wide variety of conditions but prefers full sunlight and moist soils. It can be found in boggy, wet areas, mountains and the coastal plains.

    Sophronitis

    • Sophronitis (sophronitis coccinea) is a perennial orchid that is native to the damp forest of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. These flowers can be found growing in trees in tropical areas. They vary in color from deep orange-red to fire engine red and can grow to 2 to 4 inches wide. The plant requires a lot of moisture and prefers partial shade in order to thrive. These orchids are generally found growing in extremely high elevations of 700 to 800 feet above sea level.

    Yellow Allamanda

    • Yellow allamanda (allamanda cathartica) also is commonly called the Yellow Bell or the Golden Trumpet. It is a tropical, evergreen vine that can grow up to 20 feet tall depending on how well the plant is supported. The yellow allamanda flower blooms from early spring to late summer and is trumpet shaped. It prefers full sunlight and moist, well-drained soils. The plant is fast growing and will spread quickly. It is often found along roadsides, in ditches and abandoned yards.

    Canna Lily

    • The canna Lily (canna generalis) is not a true lily. It belongs in the same family with bananas and ginger. It is a large, tropical, perennial herb that can grow up to 10 feet tall though normal height is around 6 feet. The flowers bloom in summer and can be either red or yellow. Canna lilies are intolerant of extreme cold and will die back in the winter. It can tolerate a wide variety of soil conditions but prefers full sunlight.
