Is a Peony Toxic to a Cat?

104 17

    Expert Insight

    • Both the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Cat Fanciers' Association list the peony as toxic to cats. The ASPCA also warns that the peony is harmful to dogs and horses.

    Effects

    • Paeonol is the toxic principle found in the peony plant that affects cats. Should a cat satisfy a craving for greens by consuming a peony plant, the paeonol will likely cause depression, diarrhea and vomiting.

    Time Frame

    • Immediate action is necessary if you suspect your cat has ingested a peony plant. Take the feline and any remaining portions of the plant (regurgitated portions will work if the cat ate the whole plant) to the veterinarian without delay.

    Prevention

    • "Prevention is the best medicine" holds true for the peony. If you cannot bear the thought of excluding them from your garden or home, make certain to keep them out of reach of your cat to avoid any potential consumption-related illness.
