How to Maintain an Inground Pool & Pump
- 1). Turn off the pool pump. Unscrew the pump's lid. Remove the small leaf basket from the pump. Clean the basket with water from a hose. Reinsert the basket into the pump and screw the lid back into place. Screw the lid on by hand to avoid over-tightening.
- 2). Turn off the pool pump. Press down on the dial valve located on top of the pool filter and rotate it to the "Backwash" setting. Turn the pump on and allow it to run for at least three minutes. Shut the pump off and rotate the dial valve to the "Rinse" setting. Turn the pump on and allow it to run for 30 seconds. Turn the pump off and return the dial valve to the "Filter" setting. Backwashing and rinsing the filter cleans the filter sand of contaminates and debris that builds up due to the water filtration process.
- 3). Shock the inground pool every two weeks. Use a chlorine- or calcium-based shock for chlorine or saltwater pools. If you have a bromine or Baquacil pool, use a shock for those types of pools. Shocks are typically applied directly to the pool water in powder form. Walk around the perimeter of the inground pool while pouring the chemical into the water to ensure equal spread.
- 4). Treat the pool with algaecide every week. Apply 3 oz. of an algae preventative directly to the pool water per 10,000 gallons of water held in the pool. Always check the instructions on the back of the algaecide bottle in case there are more specific application instructions.
- 5). Assemble the pool's vacuuming equipment. Vacuum the bottom, steps and sides of the pool to remove any debris from the surfaces.
