    Clarifies Job Description

    • The employee self-appraisal can require the worker to give a description of his job and duties. Requiring the worker to describe his job and tasks can help to clarify any discrepancies that may exist between management and the worker. Workers also have an opportunity to provide the supervisor with information on the details of his job and place in the company. A role in an organization may change over time without management being aware that workers are performing additional duties or have more responsibilities.

    Opens Dialogue

    • The employee self-appraisal can spark communication between the worker and supervisor. Traditional performance evaluations tend to be one-sided, with the supervisor doing most of the talking. A self-appraisal can be a starting point for a conversation on how the worker is performing. The supervisor or manager must prepare to offer his own evaluation during the employee review as well. Using a self-appraisal and traditional evaluation approach during the employee review provides an opportunity for the manager and worker to discuss the worker's performance.

    Career Development

    • The self-appraisal may provide the worker with an opportunity to state his career goals with the company. The supervisor and worker may develop a plan to help the worker reach his goals through training or additional responsibility in the organization. Supervisors can mentor workers and help the employee reach his highest potential. The company and employee gain from an employee working at his highest level.

    Team Approach

    • An employee self-appraisal fosters a team approach to employee reviews. The worker is included in the process when a self-evaluation is part of a performance review. The worker and supervisor together evaluate the employee's performance during the appraisal period. Employees have a voice in the exchange and can offer insight into weak areas and provide the supervisor with ideas to improve performance. Supervisors should include other performance appraisal techniques during an employee review to give comprehensive feedback to the worker.
