    Direction Signs

    • Make stand-alone signs to place around the VBS area. Nail a sturdy dowel stick to two pieces of wood that form an "X" shaped stand. Glue or nail direction signs to several stands. Make the signs from heavy cardboard. Make "one way" signs to direct the flow of groups who will move from one area to another. Create signs such as "food ahead" or "rest stop, one-half mile" and possibly "registration area" and a sign to each age-level's room. Get really creative and create yellow triangular signs that warn travelers of animals that might cross the road, like moose, skunks and deer. Or use ideas from Bible times like camels and donkeys, whales and fish, boats and arks. Make some Route 254 signs to place around the entire VBS area.

    Hanging Decorations

    • Hang various decorations from the ceiling, in doorways or along banisters and non-essential railings. (Be careful not to cover stair handrails.) Make paper or fabric replicas of state flags or state birds and flowers. Obtain posters of attractions some states and cities offer. Make replicas of hotel signs, using the real names or made-up names of hotels like "Good Choices Inn" or "Salvation Destination." Duplicate or make up state "Welcome" or "Thanks for Visiting" signs. Reinforce posters and other items that tend to curl up with a poster-board backing.

    Wall Displays

    • Fill a hallway with some sights the children would see on a road trip. Obtain travel brochures from several vacation destinations and fasten these to the walls. Display maps of states or cities and the country. Create displays next to classroom doors, in the main gathering room and in snack and craft areas. Make a display of postcards and photos from travel magazines or attraction brochures. Enlarge clipart pictures of cars, vans, and travel trailers and fasten them to an area to look like a line of traffic.

    Interest Areas

    • Use detour signs and road barricades to block off areas you wish to keep the children away from. Cover registration, snack area and craft area tables with picnic table cloths. Put up some tents indoors and outside for display only or to use as a story area. Have an awning-type tent over some chairs outdoors for a story, snack or craft area. Fill backpacks or travel suitcases with frisbees, balls and other recreation items. Store the bags inside tents when finished. Make travel trailers from large cardboard appliance boxes for display or play. Create a convenience store and gas station area where children can choose prizes they earn each day or night of VBS.
