103 10
Twitter is one of the fastest growing networks on the internet and the key to its success is the "simplicity".
We as humans are social creatures love to connect with people.
When you are a member of Twitter it asks you a simple question "What is Happening?" Your answer to this question must be under 140 characters in length.
You can share with others in your network what is happening in your life, business, world, environment, politics...
anything and everything.
You can update this via mobile text, instant message or the web.
One can also consider Twitter as an information network more than a social network, more like having your own radio station.
Why Twitter for business? Business owners will have to be where the people are.
I remember when I was going to school in Sri Lanka, after school out side the school gate we see ice-cream vendors with their carts.
We do not see them near the school during school holidays or during school time.
You get the idea! That is the whole point in you getting to these networks and share what is happening! So, if you are not on Twitter yet go to the site to create an account.
Keep the following in mind when you are creating your account
  1. User Name - Your name is the best as you are building your own brand online.
If your name is already taken be creative; may be you can use hyphens, underscores, middle initials, full name etc.
Most of the time when people are looking to connect they "Google" you and 99% of the time they will use your name.
  2. Use the same username across all the social media and your email.
This will again help you with your online brand.
This is optional, but highly recommend.
  3. Your Bio - Tell people what you do, your interests etc.
    let your personality shines...
    But, just be YOU.
You do not have to be someone else, just remember that you are a unique individual.
  4. Upload your own photo so that people know who they are connecting with.
OK...
you created your Twitter account, now before start following anyone, send some tweets out.
Have at least 10 tweets on your page before you start following people or invite others to connect with you.
Why? People do not want to see a blank page and you can show your followers what you like to talk about.
Just imagine that you bought a radio station.
You want people to tune in.
In other words you will need people to follow you.
If you are the likes of Oprah or Bill Gates, you just need to let others know that you joined and others will start following.
We have to work at it to get the followers to our account.
How to get followers?
  1. You start following people and around 40% of them will follow you back.
It is important not to be too aggressive in following people at the beginning.
Twitter will not like it and your account may get suspended.
To be on the safe side you may want to start by following 50-100 people a day
  2. You can have a link to your Twitter profile on your blog, business card, web site, Facebook profile page, Email signature, any online profile you create...
    etc
Where to find people to follow?
  1. You can search for people in twitter using keywords relating to your niche.
I would search MLM, Network marketing...
    etc.
  2. Go to the twitter accounts of the influential people, coaches and gurus in your target audience and start following their followers.
  3. From the blogs, web sites, business cards...
    etc.
When you get to the point of following 2000 twitters, you cannot follow anymore until you also have 2000 followers.
What you need to do here is to un-follow people not following you, and start following new people.
Once you get through this barrier, you will need to have a follower, following ratio of 9:10.
Finally, I am sure this twitter guide gives you enough information to get started.
I cannot stress the importance of having a Twitter account if you are building any kind of business.
