Foreign Travel and Currency Exchange

For Americans who are planning on foreign travel, one of the details that should be addressed is how to handle money and how to manage currency exchange.

Exchange Rates

Exchange rates for foreign currency change from day to day, depending on the strength and weakness of the two currencies in question. For example, when the dollar is strong against another currency, then the United States dollar is actually worth more. So, if the Mexican peso is worth.54 dollars then the purchasing power of the US dollar is actually close to twice as much as that of the peso.

You can find exchange rates in a number of ways. Large papers often print daily exchange rates in the money or financial sections. Also you can find daily exchange rates in financial publications like the Wall Street Journal. There are also websites that offer currency exchange rates and these can be an easy way to spot check exchange rates before you leave on your foreign trip. Finally, you can also talk to your bank and they will have current exchange rates.

Currency Exchange

When you travel, it is a good idea to have access to money in several different ways. One way is to carry a relatively small amount of local currency with you as you travel to the foreign country. This can be helpful if you are traveling to a large international airport, since you should be able to immediately exchange your local currency for the foreign currency at an exchange kiosk.

Another method is to go to your local primary bank branch and ask for a small amount of currency from the country you will be traveling to. In some cases, you may need to talk to you bank in advance because it is not common to have foreign currency at most banks.

You can also purchase American Express travelers checks for your travel expenses. While travelers checks are not as popular as they have been in the past, they are still a secure and safe way to address foreign currency needs. You can go to most large banks in the country you are visiting and cash travelers checks.

If you have an ATM card or a credit card, you can also use these for access to foreign currencies. This method is actually one of the best, because you will receive the most current - and usually the best - exchange rates. However, you should make sure that your PIN number is only four digits and that you notify your bank or credit card company that you will be traveling and what countries you will be visiting. Most banks and credit card companies have safety measures in place to prevent fraud and identity theft and will place a block or hold on your card until they can contact you. Of course, if you are out of the country and do not have access to your telephone calls, then you may find that the vacation of your dreams turns into a nightmare if you cannot access money for your travels.

Summary

If you are planning on foreign travel, then you will need to decide how you will deal with the need for currency exchange. There are several safe and secure ways to exchange money, including using your credit card or ATM, purchasing and using travelers checks or exchanging your local currency for foreign currency at banks.
