    • 1). Gently twist the two ends of the fly rod so that the line guides line up with each other directly. Pull straight out until the two ends slide apart. Do not twist or turn the rod while you turn; these pieces are made to slide directly into and out of each other. This will expose the two ferrules, or male and female pieces.

    • 2). Dampen a soft cloth with denatured alcohol or petroleum jelly. Coat the male ferrule with your chosen cleaner and slide it in and out of the female end repeatedly. This will clean both ferrules.

    • 3). Remove the male end from the female end once again. Wipe excess cleaner from the male end with a clean rag or cloth. Use a clean cotton swab to wipe excess cleaner and dirt from the female end.

    • 4). Dampen a clean rag with warm, soapy water. Use mild dishwashing liquid to form suds in the water. Ring out the rag so that it is damp but not saturated.

    • 5). Wipe down the cork handle of the fly rod with the soapy rag to remove surface dirt and dust. When finished, rinse out the rag of all soap and wipe the handle down again to remove residual suds from the handle.

    • 6). Dry the ferrules and handle with a clean towel.
