Making candles at home can be a great craft to do with the family.
By using containers that you have around the house, you can make your project eco friendly and also teach your kids how fun recycling can actually be.
Here are basic instructions to help you get started.
Candle Making Supplies You Will Need Container for candles - Jelly jars work great for this Double Boiler Dye Chips Fragrance Oil Glue dots or wick stickers Heat Gun Newspaper Paper Towels Pencils Wax Wicks Purchasing Candle Supplies or Candle Making Kits You can purchase candle making supplies at your local hobby store.
Most hobby stores have candle making wax, candle molds, candle wicks, and candle fragrances.
By purchasing them separately you can make your own custom candle.
Alternately, you can do an Internet search and find candle making kits that come with everything you would need for your candle project.
Basic Candle Making Safety Making candles is relatively simple.
However, there are some basic safety guidelines you should follow.
1.
Never leave melting wax unattended.
2.
Keep small children away from melting wax.
3.
Keep your materials within a safe reach.
Candle Making Instructions Step 1 Prepare your work surface by placing old newspaper or plastic down Step 2 Set your wick into the center of your container.
If you are using wick stickers, peel the paper from both sides and set the tab of your wick in the center of the wick sticker.
Place the wick into your container making sure that you have it centered Step 3 Weigh your wax and place it into your double boiler Step 4 Melt wax according to manufacturer's suggested melt point Step 5 Once wax has completely melted.
Stir in your color chips and fragrance.
Make sure both are dissolved.
Step 6 Let your wax cool to approximately 160 degrees.
Step 7 Slowly pour melted wax into container.
Step 8 After you have poured your wax.
Make sure wicks are straight and centered.
Place the wick between 2 pencils to help keep it in place.
Step 9 Allow candles to cool completely.
If the top of your wax is uneven, you can use either a heat gun or hair dryer to melt the top and smooth the surface.
Step 10 Allow your candles to set up overnight.
Once they have set up, trim your wick to 1/4".
Step 11 Let your candles cure for at least 48 hours before burning.
Now you are ready to relax and enjoy your candles.
