You may have seen murder mystery games played on your favorite movies or TV shows, but there are actually many different versions you can play easily at home with a group of friends. Most games come with character cards, information and basic plots. Some games include props, such as jewels, and others are more improvisational. All games range between $20 and $50, and will provide hours of fun. - Dead Man’s Chest is a pirate mystery game that doesn't only revolve around murder, but also revolves around a missing treasure and kidnapped daughter. Players will have a specified amount of "goods" that they'll be able to use to barter with other players, who may know different information or clues about finding the treasure, or finding the murderer. To add even more fun, try having players talk in their best pirate accent throughout the night.
- All at Sea is a murder mystery game that takes place on a cruise ship during World War 1. The captain is murdered and it's up to the passengers and crew to figure out who killed him. The game is unique because the cruise ship has passengers of all types: rich, poor, spies, journalists, etc., to make the plot more entertaining. Make it interesting by adding a "sea sickness" element: tell players to spin around 10 times every 15 minutes to get dizzy, or "sea sick."
- Desperate Wives is a murder mystery game just for women, based on the hit TV show "Desperate Housewives," in which a murder has happened in a seemingly calm neighborhood. Added to the murder are affairs and back-stabbing lies that must also be sorted out in the game.
- Who Shot the Sheriff takes place in the wild west and includes many characters you'd expect to see, including a saloon owner, native Americans and a "city slicker." The story is about a stagecoache on its way west for the gold rush that ends up stranded in a ghost town. This game pairs nicely with a barbecue dinner and allows participants to dress casually in jeans.
- The Karma Club takes place on a hippie commune having a going away party, which makes for a perfect game to play at a real going away party. The game includes a band playing, which you could substitute with a stereo or actually hire a real band to play. The band manager is killed and recordings go missing, making for a double-mystery game. Since hippies act more laid back, finding clues from others may be more difficult but creates a fun challenge.
- A good time to throw a murder mystery party is when you already have an excuse to have a large group of people together, such as the holidays. The Night Before Christmas is a murder mystery game to play on Christmas Eve, or any time in December. Integrate opening presents, drinking eggnog and caroling with the game, as you play a family at a party where the valet has been found dead. The game gives players items, but using your own Christmas gifts could be a twist.
