When Should an Outdoor Garden Be Planted?

    Growing Season

    • Decide what your particular growing season is. The northern half of the United States and Canada, USDA regions 1 through 5, have one growing season. This season is late spring through early fall. Some parts of region 6, region 7, and most of region 8, have two main growing seasons--one from early spring to the middle of the summer, and one from the middle of the summer to late fall. Very warm regions of the United States, like regions 9 and 10, can have two or three growing seasons that last year round. Check with a USDA region map or ask your local garden supply store what your growing season is, if you don't know.

    Planting for One Growing Season

    • Plant an outdoor garden late in the spring for regions that have one growing season. The late spring differs from location to location. It comes earlier closer to the ocean, and the further south you get. In general, planting season begins after the last frost. Pay attention to your local weather station and to the famer's almanac to make sure that your area will not have another frost. Then, plant your outdoor garden.

    Planting for Two Growing Seasons

    • Plant outdoor gardens in regions that have two growing seasons according to the particular growing season itself. Usually, you will plant your first crop in late April, and harvest it around the end of June. The second crop will be planted in July and harvested in late October or early November. Pay close attention to the frost patterns in your area, and make sure that your last crop is harvested before the first frost, and that your first crop is planted after the lat frost.

    Year Round Planting

    • In regions that have year round growing seasons, plant your outdoor garden according to the local growing seasons. These are usually from April to July, August to November, and December to March. Plant your outdoor garden at the start of each growing season. With no frosts, you can cultivate different crops at different times according to your preferences.
