To Regret but One Thing

Regret but one thing

Do you have any regrets in life? Sure you do, and so do I. But do you regret that you have only one life to live?

Listen to this: Before he died, he wrote a few letters home, but the enemy destroyed them so that "the rebels should not know they have a man who can die so firmly." The enemy, however, did relent and let him speak some last words.

He was just a young American school teacher when he left home for war. At twenty-one he was not a commanding figure in stature. He was a little above average height, fair skin, blue eyes, with light hair.

His commanding general wanted someone to spy on the enemy across the East River, but spying was not a job that the average soldier sought out with a volunteer spirit. Then again, the school teacher was no average soldier.

Dressed like a Dutch schoolmaster, he ventured through the enemy lines and got what he was sent to get. On his way back the enemy found the information on him and accused him of spying.

With no time to waste, the British put a noose around his neck and allowed him to identify himself. With noose around his neck, he told them he was Captain Nathan Hale and then added this statement: "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my county." In doing so says author Derric Johnson, the young school teacher "showed the world what Americans are made of."

In a day when Christians find it hard to attend church because of their busy schedules, I'm encouraged to recall the sacrifices of my brother and sister veterans who were not too busy to serve this great nation when called upon. I think the Believer in America can learn something from a US veteran: He and she served with few regrets. And if called upon to do it again, this veteran would. Oh! If only fair-weather Christians would emulate the same commitment for weekly corporate worship.

Keep the faith. If we don't, someone is waiting to take it away. Attend church some Sunday and gladly worship with the Body of Christ.
