Natural Remedies for Head Lice

    Mayonnaise

    • Mayonnaise is probably the most common of the natural remedies for head lice. A dollop of the condiment (the same amount as you would use of shampoo) should be massaged into the scalp. Cover the head with a shower cap and allow the mayonnaise to stay on for at least one hour. Wash the hair with a regular shampoo to remove the mayo.

The mayo will suffocate the live lice. It will also make the hair too slippery for lice and nits to hold onto, so the majority will be washed away with the mayo.

    Vinegar

    • Using vinegar as a conditioner works well to ensure all of the lice and nits are gone from the scalp. The vinegar will help to dissolve the nits. Mix 1/2 cup plain vinegar and 1/2 cup warm water and massage through hair after shampooing and rinsing to remove any remains of the lice or nits. Allow the conditioner to sit for one to two minutes, then thoroughly wash out. Shampoo the hair again in order to get rid of the vinegar smell.

    Pick the Nits

    • Conducting a thorough search of the scalp and hair follicles should be done when all other home treatments for head lice are complete. Head lice and eggs can be tricky to completely remove, and if you do not get them all, they will continue to spread. Separate and comb through hair with a fine-toothed comb. Remove any lice and nits with a pair of tweezers. Avoid picking them out with your fingers, as lice can become buried under your fingernails.
