    Knee Support and Braces

    • Knee Brace

There is no cure for arthritis. Treatment usually consists of treating the symptoms. If you find it extremely difficult to walk or bend the knee, your physician may have you fitted for a knee brace or knee support. These prescription braces are usually covered under most medical plans. The braces or supports take weight and pressure off the inflamed area, making it easier to move the joint.

    Medication

    • Over-the-counter pain creams may help ease the symptoms and pain of osteoarthritis. Acetaminophen, sold generic or as Tylenol, is available OTC to help with the pain. NSAIDs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen, are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that can help with pain and swelling. Your physician may prescribe a stronger painkiller such as Darvocet or codeine for pain as well as muscle relaxers.

    Exercise

    • Gentle exercise that is easy on the joints is recommended to maintain healthy cartilege. Walking, biking and swimming are easy on the joints and can help with pain. Exercise can strengthen the muscles that surround the joint which makes the joint more stable. If you become sore you should stop exercising and try hot and cold compresses on the pain.
