How to Complete a Money Order

    • 1). Purchase your money order. There are several different types of money orders you can purchase, but the best ones are Western Union or U.S. Postal Service Money Orders. The first thing you want to do when you purchase a money order is make sure the amount is correct before leaving the store. If the amount is not correct, hand it back to the clerk and politely ask him to either give you another one to make up the difference at the company's expense or to print you a new one.

    • 2). Place the money order in a safe place until you arrive at home. Immediately fill out the money order. This way no one can take it and fill it out for themselves. On the first line, place the name of the company or person you are going to give the money to.

    • 3). Print your name on the line that says "Signer or purchaser." If your money order has two lines, write your address on the second line. If it only has one line, put your house number and street name right after your name. There will be a line for you to sign your name. Sign your name and your money order is now as safe as any check could be.

    • 4). Remove the stub from the money order and turn it over. There should be two lines for you to write who the money order went to and for how much. If there is no line, write this information somewhere on the money order stub where it does not cover the toll-free telephone number on the stub. Place the stub in a file cabinet or in your usual place for important papers. This is a receipt for your money. Should you need to contact the money order company, you will need the information that is on the stub.
