When it comes time to clean the carpets in your home, you're going to have to decide what cleaning method you feel will work best.
There are four different basic methods of cleaning carpets, and each one has its advantages and disadvantages.
In order to help you sort through the different types of carpet cleaning and make your decisions, more information about carpet shampooing, the dry powder method, bonnet cleaning, and external extraction will be described in this article.
When shampooing carpets, it's important to choose a product that will produce a lot of foam.
By using foam and allowing it to dry on your carpets, you eliminate the need to get your carpets really wet.
Before the foam dries it is supposed to attract soil that is deep down in the carpet fibers and draw it to the surface.
After the foam has dried thoroughly, you can then vacuum it up along with the soil.
Actually, however, shampoos are poor cleaners because they have very little detergent in them.
In addition, they can leave a sticky residue on carpets which will cause soil to stick to them very quickly again.
Many people prefer to dry clean their carpets so that they won't be inconvenienced by having to wait long periods of time for the carpets to dry.
The powders used to dry clean carpets are made up of water, solvents, and detergents.
These compounds are designed to attract soil from deep down in carpets and absorb it, making it easier to remove.
Sometimes these powders are merely sprinkled on carpets and then vacuumed away.
Other methods utilize a machine that forces the powders down into the carpets.
With any of these chemical compounds, it's important to vacuum carefully to make sure all of the chemicals are removed.
Carpet manufacturers usually don't recommend bonnet cleaning, but the method is still being used.
This method uses a machine that drives wet scrubbing pads or brushes.
The pressure the machine puts on the carpet fibers can cause distortion and damage.
In addition, the method leaves a lot of detergent residue in the carpets which causes them to become soiled again very quickly.
The final method of cleaning carpets is by extraction and is the method most often recommended by carpet manufacturers.
Using this technique involves spraying water and detergent deep into carpet fibers and then sucking the liquid back out using a powerful vacuum.
Many carpet cleaning companies use hoses that are hooked to a truck.
All that they bring into your home are the hoses, and the dirty water is then sucked out into the truck and carried away from your house.
These truck-mounted units offer stronger suction than portable extraction cleaners do, and do a much better job of cleaning and drying carpets.
Of course, hiring a professional cleaning company will also be the most expensive method of cleaning your carpets.
