    Types

    • Two types of cypress trees exist; bald cypress and pond cypress. According to the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, bald cypress grows to a maximum height of 150 feet with a potential diameter of as much as 12 feet. The tree lives for hundreds of years.

    Pond Cypress

    • The pond cypress typically does not grow to the same expansive size of the bald cypress. Still, it possesses a considerable stretch, reaching 80 feet in height and a width of 15 feet, reports the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

    Growth Rate

    • The species grows quickly -- as much as 24 inches annually -- especially if there's sufficient moisture, indicates the University of Illinois Extension service. The cypress achieves its maximum size when grown in slightly acidic soil.

    Considerations

    • Standing water is a requirement for seed germination and maximum size in the wild, but both the bald cypress and pond cypress grow sufficiently in landscape situations, including environments that do not flood.
