How to Check Email When Away From Home
- 1). Remember your user name and password. This may sound trivial, but people often forget this vital information. Without it, you can forget about checking your email when away from your home computer. These two pieces of information can be easy to forget if you use the "Remember This Information" option for your email account. Typing your info in manually will help you to remember your user name and password.
- 2). Search for places that allow computer and Internet access, either for free or a small fee. Popular sites that offer free Internet access include the public library, business centers in hotels and certain small cafes and coffee shops. Get a local library card, because some facilities may not allow you to use the computer without a library card.
- 3). Use a general Internet browser on the computer to search for your personal email account (as opposed to a shortcut that may be on your personal PC). Open any browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or AOL Explorer.
- 4). Type your email provider's website address into the URL. For example, if you are checking your Yahoo! email, you would visit the Yahoo! website at www.yahoo.com.
- 5). Look for a "Mail" icon; some websites indicate this with a picture of an envelope or mailbox. Click on this icon to sign into your personal account, using your user name and password. From there, you can check and send emails just like you would if you were using your own personal PC.
- 6). Remember to sign out of the account after sending and/or receiving email, especially if you are using a publicly accessible computer. If you do not sign out, the next person who visits that Web page will be able to access your email account.
- 7). Invest in a laptop with an internal wireless card if you spend a lot of time away from home. This way, as long as you have your laptop and are near a wireless Internet hotspot, you can always check your email.
- 8). Jump on the smart phone/PDA bandwagon. Most of these types of phones allow you to check your email through the device. You can send, receive and even upload Word documents with just a few clicks on the cell phone. This option is less bulky than carrying around a laptop.
- 9). Find the nearest game console. If you are away from home, but you happen to be near an Xbox or PlayStation 2 or 3, you can check your email from the game console as long as the game console is connected to the Internet. Because you must use the directional pad and toggle on the joystick, rather than a keyboard, this can be very time-consuming. The stick and directional pad (D Pad) act like a mouse. Use the controller to select the Internet connection. Click on the Internet browser. Once the QWERTY (keyboard) screen pops up, use the joystick to type in the Web address of your email provider. Log into your email account. From there, the screen will display specific commands to guide you through the rest of the email-checking process.
