In the year 1936, a Dutch expedition to Carstensz tried to determine the highest summit of all on the mountain range. They failed in their attempts but managed to reach both of the glaciers. They covered the Eastern part of this range and also Ngga Pulu summits. Sudden weather disturbances caused them to postpone and then cancel their plans to climb the bare peak of Carstensz Pyramid.

Melting of snow due to global warming has caused the peak of Ngga Pulu to become a subsidiary peak at the height of 4,862 meters. Weather scientists have used complex algorithm and weather patterns ranging over a decade to deduce that in the year 1936, when the glaciers were spread around 13 square kilometers of the mountain, Ngga Pulu was the highest summit of them all with a height over 4900 meters.

The current highest summit of the Carstensz Pyramid was not ascended until the year 1962. An Austrian mountaineer by the name of Heinrich Harrier, one who carried out the Tibet Survey and climbed Eiger north face, along with three more of his friends, a mountaineer from New Zealand named Philip Temple, an Australian Russell Kippax and a Dutch patrol officer Bert Huizenga devised a workable route and finally ascended successfully to the top.

The peak was rechristened as ‚¬"Puntjak Soekarno‚¬ by Indonesia when it regained control of the province in the year 1963. It was done out of respect for their president. Afterwards they changed the name into Puncak Jaya which translates roughly into Mountain of Victory into the local language of Indonesian people. Mountaineers all over the world still call it Carstensz Pyramid.

To gain access to the peak and the mountain range, you have to go through the national park and reserve. This requires a special permission from the government in the form of a permit. The mountain was closed for the common people, tourist and hikers between the years 1995 and 2005. In the year 2006, government of Indonesia restarted their tourism program and gave limited access to several adventure tourism agencies to carry out mountaineering and hiking in the area.
During summer, the peak of Mount Jaya are devoid of ice.

Still there are many glaciers on the slopes of the mountain. Most popular ones are Carstensz Glacier, West North wall Firn, and the East North wall Firn. Meren Glacier has been completely vanished from the mountain due to Global Warming.

Out of the Seven Summits peak bagging list, mount Puncak Jaya is the most difficult one. Mountaineers all over the globs have given it the highest rating for the technical and physical demands required while climbing it.
