About 'Big Mama' Tomato Growing
- Plant 'Big Mama' tomatoes once soil has warmed and the chance of frost has passed. Place tomato plants in rich, well-drained soil where they will receive six to eight hours of full sun exposure each day. Plant tomatoes in rows, allowing 4 feet between rows. Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart.
- Stake or cage 'Big Mama' tomato plants for support and to keep fruit off the ground. Water plants approximately twice a week, soaking the soil eight to 10 inches deep. Withholding water in late August allows fruit to ripen quickly. Fertilize established plants every 7 to 10 days.
- Harvest 'Big Mama' tomatoes approximately 80 days after planting. Allow 'Big Mama' tomatoes to ripen and remain on the vine as long as possible, to ensure a fuller flavor. Do not refrigerate tomatoes; the cold decreases their flavor. Store 'Big Mama' tomatoes at room temperature for two to three days.
