Strength and Durability

• Biodegradable fishing line is manufactured to keep its strength and durability for the first year of use. It is as strong as monofilament line and still has many of the same features, such as high UV and abrasion resistance, good knot strength and casting distance. Biodegradable fishing lures are resistant to saltwater, corrosion and rust. They are lead-free as well.
  
  

Environmental Impact

• Biodegradable fishing products are designed to leave as little impact on wildlife and the environment as possible. Biodegradable fishing line, for example, will completely degrade within five years. Monofilament fishing line will degrade as well, but it would take hundreds of years to do so. Because biodegradable fishing line begins to lose tensile strength after 10 to 12 months, wildlife that is caught in line that is lost or broken and left behind can break free easily.
  
  

Appeal to Fish

• Biodegradable bait is just as attractive to fish as its plastic and rubber counterparts. It releases scent into the water at a higher rate than plastic bait and uses attractants that are naturally derived. Many types of fishing tackle actually contain lead or non-biodegradable material like rubber. These materials can leave a lasting and damaging effect on the environment. Biodegradable bait contains no chemicals, such as petroleum, which actually repels fish, and it degrades over time.
  
  

Other Considerations

• Not only do anglers have to consider what their tackle is doing to the environment, they need to be aware that there are biodegradable marine products for their boats as well. Part of the largest environmental impact left by anglers is in the fuels and chemicals they use to run and maintain their boats. For example, biodegradable marine engine oil is available that provides protection for engines while leaving a limited impact on the water it might be released into because it uses ingredients that are biodegradable. Manufacturers of marine cleaners also offer a variety of plant-based cleaners that both clean and protect your boat from salt water spray and scum without chemicals that are harmful for the water and marine life.
